Scaling up Ocean Action Based on Science and Innovation for the Implementation of Goal 14: Stocktaking, Partnerships and Solutions

UN Ocean Conference 2022

The second UN Ocean Conference is an unmissable opportunity to mobilize support and accelerate action to secure ocean health and achieve a nature-climate-people-positive future. It provides a powerful platform to build political will and momentum for greater ocean action and investment by the public and private sector, and in support of WWF’s advocacy objectives at the global, regional and national levels.

The meeting will be structured around ‘interactive dialogues’ to address key themes and issues.

  • Addressing marine pollution.
  • Managing, protecting, conserving and restoring marine and coastal ecosystems.
  • Minimizing and addressing ocean acidification, deoxygenation and ocean warming.
  • Making fisheries sustainable and providing access for small-scale artisanal fishers to marine resources and markets.
  • Promoting and strengthening sustainable ocean-based economies, in particular for small island developing states and least developed countries.
  • Increasing scientific knowledge, and developing research capacity and transfer of marine technology.
  • Enhancing the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and their resources by implementing international law, as reflected in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
  • Leveraging interlinkages between Sustainable Development Goal 14 and other SDGs toward the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Through events and the conference program, WWF will bring experience and expertise to help guide governments, business and society toward the ambitious actions and investments required to deliver the SDGs and SDG14 in particular. We will highlight our efforts to accelerate nature-based ocean-climate solutions, advance the sustainability of fisheries and coastal communities, build a sustainable blue economy, protect 30% of all land and waters, adopt a new governance for the high seas, agree a Paris-style agreement for biodiversity and a legally binding global treaty on plastic pollution, secure a global moratorium on deep seabed mining, and so much more.
